Ealing recluse jailed for two years for knife attack
A recluse who stabbed a pensioner in the throat and slit his face with a kitchen knife has been jailed for two years.
Alan Giles, of Bloomsbury Close, Ealing, lashed out at a debt-collector, slashing his face and neck before pinning Derek Davis to the floor as blood drained from his wounds.
Mr Davis, who was 69 at the time of the attack in June 2009, said he was grateful to Amine Elkhoury, the board director of Bloomsbury Close who helped restrain Giles from continuing his attack.
Mr Davis, who lives in Watford, said: "Mr Giles had not paid his service charges for a number of years and we went to the property with bailiffs, a locksmith and a solicitor.
"Giles opened the door brandishing a kitchen knife in each hand and jumped on me and it seemed like he was fully intent on finishing me off.
"There was blood everywhere and at first I hadn't realised how badly I was hurt.
"I was so lucky Mr Amine restrained him; he saved my life.
"I was sent down to do my job and in all my 35 years experience, nothing like this has happened before.
"I can't forgive him and the wounds hurt more now than they did at the time."
Self-employed Mr Davis was taken to The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Tuesday June 30 2009 where doctors had to stitch together the muscles in his lip and a 15cm deep cut to his face.
Giles was arrested and charged with assault and unlawful and malicious wounding with the intent to cause GBH and possession of an offensive weapon and was sentenced to two years imprisonment after a mental health report was taken into consideration.
Father-of-two, Mr Elkhoury, said: "I had never seen Giles as his curtains were always closed but I knew he hadn't paid his service charges.
"It was a shock to see the attack and think if he hadn't have been pinned down, Mr Davis would have been killed.
"I couldn't watch someone get hurt in front of me and I always feel like we should help eacher and be heroes from the inside."
Bassam Mahfouz, Labour's Parliamenary Candidate for Ealing, who met with Amine after the incident said: "There are certain moments in your life which show what type of person you really are.
"He showed great strength of character to step in and act, whilst so many others would have, and in this case did, run away.
"He's a real modern day hero and one who should be applauded for his actions in saving a man's life."
