More Staff to help Depressed in Ealing

A new mental health and well being centre has opened to deal with rising numbers of people suffering depression and anxiety.

Figures from 2007/08 show 434 people were experiencing depression but the new Mental Health and Well Being centre will be equipped to deal with 5000 in the next year.

A dedicated team of 37 will be located at the centre at 84 Uxbridge Road, West Ealing, and will provide psychological therapy, help engage people in the community and deal with barriers to employment and training.

Mark Kenwright, head of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and clinical lead for IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) said the service was able to expand after funding was secured.

Mr Kenwright said: "Ealing is one of three boroughs to pilot this scheme and this is ground breaking for patients and staff.

"By expanding existing services, with more staff and trainees, it should save GP's time and make a financial saving to the Primary Care Trust.

"In the past, people have had to wait a year before being referred and they could have sunk deeper in to the depression spiral.

"With the expansion of the service, waiting times will be dramatically reduced and people may undergo assessments the same day they call."
